Reporting a bug

Every tool runs inside your browser, so we never receive your file. That is good for your privacy and awkward for debugging: we cannot open the document that failed, which means your description has to do the work. The reports we can act on usually say:

  • Which tool it was, and what you were trying to do with it.
  • The browser and device, such as Chrome on Windows or Safari on an iPhone.
  • What happened instead, including the exact wording of any error message.
  • Roughly how large the file was and where it came from, such as a phone camera, a flatbed scanner, or an export from Word.

There is no need to attach the file, and we would rather you did not. If the problem only happens with one specific document, say so. That detail usually points at how the file was produced rather than at the tool itself, and it is often enough for us to reproduce the fault with a file of our own.

Other things worth writing about

  • A tool gave a result you did not expect. These are the messages we chase down first, even when the tool is technically behaving as designed.
  • Something in the written guidance on a tool page is wrong, unclear or out of date. That copy is maintained by hand, so corrections genuinely help.
  • A tool you keep coming here hoping to find, and do not.
  • A file format you work with that we do not handle yet.

What we cannot help with

We cannot recover a password you have forgotten. Unlock PDF removes a password you already know so you can work with your own document, and nothing here attempts to break encryption on a file you cannot already open.

We also cannot retrieve something you processed earlier. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored, so there is no copy of your work on our side to send back to you. If you closed the tab before downloading, the file is gone and it has to be made again.
