How to resize an image

1. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP file. The current dimensions appear straight away.
2. Type the width or the height you want.
3. Leave the lock closed to keep the proportions; open it to set both numbers independently.

Why the aspect ratio lock matters

With the lock closed, setting one dimension calculates the other automatically, so the picture keeps its shape. Open the lock and you can force any dimensions you like, but if the new ratio does not match the original, the image will stretch, and faces and circles are the first things to give it away. Unless you are deliberately squashing something, keep it locked.

Picking the right dimensions

A few numbers worth knowing. Full HD screens are 1920 × 1080, so an image wider than that gains nothing on most monitors. Instagram displays square posts at 1080 × 1080. A typical blog content column is 700 to 900 pixels wide. Passport and ID photo requirements are usually given in millimetres at 300 DPI, which works out at roughly 413 × 531 pixels for a 35 × 45 mm photo.

Enlarging is a different matter from shrinking. Making an image smaller discards information and looks clean; making it larger has to invent pixels that were never captured, and the result is soft. If you need a bigger image, start from a bigger original wherever you can.

Frequently asked questions

Does resizing reduce the file size too?

Usually yes, and substantially: halving both dimensions leaves a quarter of the pixels. If you need to hit a specific file size rather than specific dimensions, use Compress Image instead.

Which format do I get back?

The same one you put in, so a PNG stays a PNG with its transparency intact.

Can I crop with this?

No. Resizing changes the scale of the whole image; cropping cuts part of it away. This tool does the former.
