Why designers use nonsense Latin

Placeholder text exists to let you judge a layout without reading it. Fill a mockup with real copy and everyone in the room starts editing the words instead of looking at the spacing, the line length and the hierarchy. Fill it with lorem ipsum and there is nothing to argue about but the design.

The tradition is old. The passage is scrambled Latin, derived from a first-century BC text by Cicero, and printers have used it as a type specimen since at least the 1500s. It survived into digital design because it has roughly the letter distribution and word length of English prose, so a block of it occupies about as much space as real copy will.

Using it responsibly

Two rules save real embarrassment. First, never let it reach production. "Lorem ipsum" has been published on live sites, in printed brochures and on billboards more times than anyone would like to admit. Search your project for the word "lorem" before you ship. Second, do not design entirely around it: real headlines are longer and messier than placeholder ones, and a layout that only works with tidy Latin will break the moment the client sends their actual copy.

Should I use it for testing a translated layout?

Test with text in the target language instead. German runs about 30% longer than English and Arabic reads right to left, and Latin placeholder text hides both problems.
