Why iPhone photos will not open on Windows

Since iOS 11, Apple devices have saved photos as HEIC rather than JPG. The format is genuinely better. It stores the same picture in roughly half the space and supports higher colour depth. But support outside Apple's ecosystem has been slow. Windows needs a codec from the Microsoft Store, many Android phones cannot display it, and a great many websites, job portals and application forms simply reject the file.

Converting to JPG solves all of that at once. JPG is the most universally supported image format in existence: there is no device, operating system or upload form made in the last twenty years that cannot handle it.

HEIC's extra colour depth is flattened to JPG's 8 bits per channel, which matters only if you were planning heavy editing, in which case keep the original.
