How to convert currencies

Choose the currency you are converting from and the one you want, enter an amount, and read the result. Rates come from the Frankfurter API, which publishes European Central Bank reference rates.

Where these rates come from and what they are for

The ECB publishes reference rates once each working day, at about 16:00 Central European Time. They are a snapshot of the mid-market rate, the midpoint between what buyers and sellers were quoting on the wholesale market at that moment. Because they are published daily rather than streamed, the figures do not move between updates, and there are no new rates at weekends or on ECB holidays.

This makes them ideal for accounting, invoicing, expense claims and getting a sense of scale. It makes them unsuitable for judging exactly what a transaction will cost you.

Why your bank gives you less

Nobody trades at the mid-market rate. Banks and exchanges quote a spread around it and keep the difference, and card networks add a foreign transaction fee on top, typically 1% to 3.5% all in, and considerably worse at airport counters. If a provider advertises "zero commission", the margin is in the rate itself.

Use the mid-market figure here as the benchmark. Compare what your provider actually offers against it, and the real cost of the conversion becomes obvious.

Does this tool send my data anywhere?

It requests exchange rates for the currency pair you select, which is the one thing on this site that needs the network. The amount you type is never transmitted. The multiplication happens in your browser.

Why has the rate not moved since yesterday?

Because ECB reference rates update once per working day. Between publications, the figure is fixed.

Are cryptocurrencies included?

No. This covers government-issued currencies published by the ECB.

Can I use these figures for tax filings?

Many authorities specify which rate source to use and on which date. Check the rule that applies to you before relying on any single source.
