How to remove a password from a PDF

What this tool does and does not do

It removes protection from a document you can already open. You supply the password, and the tool writes out a decrypted copy. It does not crack, guess, or bypass anything. If you do not know the password, this tool cannot help you, and neither can any honest one.

The work is done by QPDF compiled to WebAssembly, running inside your browser. The document and the password stay on your device from start to finish.

Why remove a password at all

• Bank and card statements arrive encrypted with a password derived from your date of birth or card number, and re-entering it every time you open a file gets old quickly.
• Encrypted PDFs cannot be merged, split, or compressed until they are decrypted, including by the other tools on this site.
• Search tools and document managers usually cannot index a file they cannot open.
• Printing or sharing a document internally is simpler when the recipient does not need a password you would then have to communicate securely.

What if I do not know the password?

Then the file stays locked. Password recovery is not something this tool offers, by design.

Is my password sent anywhere?

No. It is used locally to decrypt the file and is discarded when you leave the page.

Some PDFs open without a password but will not let me print. Can you fix that?

Those carry an owner password with permission restrictions. If you have that password, enter it here and the restrictions are removed along with the encryption.

Does the content change?

No. Pages, text and images come out exactly as they went in.
