Word to PDF Online Free

Turn a Word document into a PDF that looks the way it did in Word, page for page. The conversion happens in your browser, so the document is never uploaded.

About this tool

How to convert Word to PDF

  1. Drop in a .docx file.
  2. Press Convert. A counter shows each page as it is drawn.
  3. Download the PDF. It keeps your file's name, so resume.docx comes back as resume.pdf.

How the layout is kept

A Word file does not store pages. It stores text and styles, and Word works out the pages each time it opens the file, deciding where every line breaks and where each page ends. To make a PDF that matches, this tool lays the document out again in your browser following Word's own rules: the same page size and margins, the same fonts and sizes, paragraph spacing that adds up the way Word adds it, line spacing measured from each font, and no kerning or automatic hyphenation, so lines break at the same words. Headers, footers, tables, pictures and page breaks come through as well.

Each finished page is drawn at high resolution into the PDF, with an invisible copy of its text laid exactly over the words. The PDF looks like the document did in Word, and you can still search it, select a sentence and copy it, the same way a scanned PDF with text recognition works.

Limits worth knowing

  • Old .doc files (Word 97 to 2003) are not supported. Open them in Word and save as .docx first.
  • Fonts the document uses must be installed on your computer to appear exactly; a missing font is replaced with a similar one, which can move line breaks.
  • Complex layouts such as text boxes, floating shapes, SmartArt and charts may shift slightly compared with Word.
  • Safari on iPhone and Mac blocks the page drawing this tool relies on. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
  • Because each page is drawn as a picture, the PDF is larger than one saved from Word, and text in it cannot be edited with a PDF editor. To edit, change the Word file and convert again.

Going the other way? PDF to Word rebuilds a PDF as an editable document. To shrink the finished PDF for an upload form, use Compress PDF.

Privacy

The document is opened and laid out by your own browser, and the PDF is written on your device. No copy is sent to our server or anyone else's, which matters for the CVs, letters and contracts people usually convert.

Frequently asked questions

Will the PDF look the same as in Word?

Very close. Lines break at the same words and pages end in the same places for ordinary documents. Fonts you do not have installed, and complex floating layouts, are where small differences appear.

Can I search and copy text in the PDF?

Yes. Every page carries an invisible text layer over the words, so search, select and copy all work.

Does it work with .doc files?

No, only .docx. Open an old .doc file in Word and use Save As to make a .docx, then convert that.

Is there a page limit?

No fixed limit. Long documents take longer and use more memory, so convert those on a computer rather than a phone.

Is my document uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the file never leaves your device.
